What Alan said. Photos uploaded to SmugMug are hosted on AWS servers, while photos uploaded to Flickr are on Yahoo servers. Flickr and SmugMug are working to move Flickr's hosting to AWS merely doing so will take some time, probable several months to a twelvemonth.

Oh, and by the way, the 414 files to Flickr are yet uploading

I dubiousness if Smugmug would pay to upgrade the Yahoo servers, they are in the process of moving Flickr to AWS, equally

I'm looking forward to the day when the links with Yahoo are cut simply in that location is no guarantee that the site will run faster just because information technology is no longer on the Yahoo servers. Site blueprint may exist a more limiting factor than the hardware and the style that Flickr generates multiple sizes and applies automobile tags may also exist contributing to slow upload times the sheer scale of the Flickr data may also exist a cistron. We volition accept to look and encounter.

Very true, fingers crossed there will be improvements, just until the "switch is thrown" we won't know. I have plenty problem with a laptop, I'm sure not up to trying to figure out a server. 😀

applies auto tags may also be contributing
Nope. Autotags are added after uploading. That might be within a second, only it tin can also be several days subsequently. I only went through my last several months of uploaded photos and I noticed quite some autotags that were not yet there inside the first day later on uploading, for I would have removed them.

I too accept observed that some auto tags are added retrospectively just others are visible equally soon every bit the upload process is completed. Whether those have been added during or immediately subsequently the upload process depends on how you ascertain the finish of the upload process. Also, just because there are auto tags processes running post upload that does not mean that there are machine tag processes running during upload. The two are not mutually exclusive. In any case that Is but a minor function of my general observation that relocating to new hardware may non significantly change the speed at which Flickr processes run. I'm not making any judgments on way or the other I'm just pointing out that nobody should assume that moving Flickr onto The AWS servers volition make Flickr significantly faster, merely it may do and hopefully it volition improve reliability. Nosotros shall take to wait and run into.

I think mayhap this thread has gotten off (my intended) topic.
While I understand that it'south Flickr'southward servers equally opposed to SmugMug'due south, it still should not take over 2 hours to upload 500 photos with an net connection that has a 110.6 mbps upload speed/
The aforementioned 500 photos took less than five minutes to upload to SmugMug.
If there are whatever Flickrstaff monitoring this thread please help.
I'yard a "pro" account holder and this is seriously impacting my workflow.
As well, unlike SmugMug, where I tin upload the photos and become onto another task, with the various Flickr fault letters ("file timed out", erroneous "invalid file extension") Ialmost experience like I'm nursing the upload to Flickr/
Thanks

Take y'all tried uploading in smaller batches?
This is just my estimate but we are not likely going to see an improvement in upload speeds until Flickr is fully migrated to new servers. Flickr doesn't control the servers and Yahoo has no incentive to upgrade.
Also keep in listen that Flickr is more often than not meant for casual photograph sharing. Business organization disquisitional needs similar yours are an edge example for Flickr and addressing them isn't likely to exist a high priority.

This is happening. We'll be on AWS soonish (6-12 months for virtually things you'd experience), so should experience similar speeds as SmugMug.

Another option is the desktop uploader. Information technology will continue trying in the background and should get through your uploads without as many (or whatsoever) timeouts. As a Pro, you have that feature. www.flickr.com/tools/

I am using the uploader and it is taking nearly v minutes per photograph. I have 126 to upload and information technology looks like it is going to accept v hours at this rate.

That's terrific speed. I'm satisfied with the speed of my SmugMug uploads, but there'south no manner mine approach 100 photos/infinitesimal. Not even shut.
